Holiday Romance: Winter stories that get under your skin

Holiday Romance at Everglow is the winter that makes two people dependent on each other – and the question of what grows between them when escape is impossible.

Holiday Romance is a genre that uses the special atmosphere of winter: snow, cold, holidays, and the days between the years. With us, it's not about mulled wine and gifts, but about the silence, the isolation, and the altered perception of time when the outside world disappears. The characters are snowed in, stranded, or voluntarily secluded – and from this arises an intimacy that would have no space in everyday life.

What it is about

Holiday Romance

In 'Snow That Holds Us', you play Bastian, a mountain rescuer who has to care for an injured snowboarder in his hut. The snow cuts you off from the world, and what begins as a duty becomes an unavoidable closeness. You decide whether to keep your distance or let yourself in with the man who initially gets on your last nerve. Time moves differently when everything outside is white and no one is coming.

'Stormstill' shows another side of winter: Liv, a journalist on the run, ends up stranded in a lighthouse on the coast. The man who lives there has made silence his language. The storm holds you captive, and you decide whether to break his silence or lose yourself in it. It's a story about listening, waiting, and the moments when words become unnecessary.

In "Carpathian Winter," you are a meteorologist at a remote weather station. Three men, one winter, one cabin – and no escape. The snow blocks the path to the valley, and the balance between you shifts. No one pushes, no one demands, and you decide whether you find a form where no one loses. It's a holiday romance that doesn't ask who you choose, but how you live together.

Chapter 1 of “Snow That Holds Us”, the way a reader opens it for the first time. Then it’s her move.

Snow That Holds UsChapter 1

The slab came off the north face at ten past two, and by three I had him out of it: one snowboarder, alive, furious, with a wrist that will need setting and a mouth that hasn't stopped. I am Bastian, thirty-six, mountain rescue for fifteen years, and my station is the only roof for six kilometres, and the road below it is now under four metres of snow.

Tobias sits by the stove with his wrist splinted and my second-best jumper on, and he has spent the last hour telling me what he thinks of the avalanche warning system, the resort, the mountain, and me.

“You could have left me,” he says. “You'd have had the hut to yourself.”

“I could have.” I hand him tea. “I'm not built like that.”

“How are you built?” He asks it like a challenge. Everything with him is a challenge. He is thirty perhaps, all edges, and I've met enough of his kind on this mountain to know that the noise is where the fear goes.

I don't answer. I check the radio, which is dead. I check the supplies, which will last three days if he eats like a normal person, and I have my doubts. Outside, the storm has settled in for the night, and in here there is one stove, one bed, one bench, and a man watching me the way you watch a door you're not sure is locked.

“You don't talk much,” he says, quieter now. “You do enough for both of us,” I tell him.

Your move.

Honestly

Who this is for. And who it isn’t.

This is yours if you

  • You love stories where snow and cold aren't just a backdrop but drive the plot.
  • You like it when characters are forced to spend time together – and something real grows from it.
  • You're not looking for Christmas romance with candles and kitsch, but honest, sometimes rough winter stories.
  • You want to decide how close two people get when the outside world disappears.

Skip it if you

  • If you expect a classic Christmas story with gift-giving and family gatherings, you'd better read "Found Family."
  • You don't like slow, atmospheric narratives where little happens and much is felt.
  • If you're looking for quick, passionate encounters without weather and waiting, try "One-Night Stand."

You set the heat yourself, from implied to explicit, and can change it in any story. What you don’t want doesn’t happen: your character keeps her boundaries.

Common questions

In short

What does Holiday Romance mean?

Holiday Romance is a genre that uses the special mood of winter: snow, holidays, the days between the years. At Everglow, the focus is not on gifts or family traditions, but on isolation and the altered perception of time when two people are cut off from the outside world.

Distinction from Forced Proximity

Forced Proximity is a trope that appears in many genres – two people have to be together for external reasons. Holiday Romance is the genre that places this closeness in winter and uses the special atmosphere of snow, cold, and silence. With us, the holidays are often just the background, not the occasion.

Can I, as a reader, really decide how the relationship develops?

Yes, at Everglow you make decisions in every chapter that determine the course of the story. In "Snow That Holds Us," you decide as Bastian whether to open up to the snowboarder or maintain professional distance. Each choice changes how close you get – and whether it becomes more than a community of need.

Are the stories very long or rather short?

Our holiday romance stories vary in length. "Storm Still" is a shorter, intense narrative over a few days. "Carpathian Winter" spans an entire winter and offers more room for development. You can decide how deep you dive – each story is self-contained.

Your First Night

Snow falls. The cabin is small. And you have no choice.

In "Snow That Holds Us," you are Bastian, a mountain rescuer, and you have to take in an injured snowboarder. The snow cuts you off, and you decide whether you just survive – or more.
