Book Boyfriend

A book boyfriend is a male character readers fall for as if he were real. The term is affectionate and describes what good romance does: you close the book and miss someone who doesn't exist.

The phrase came out of reading circles where women swapped favourite characters the way friends swap crushes. A book boyfriend doesn't have to be perfect. He needs one quality that's rare in life: undivided attention.

He has a voice you can hear on the page. He has a gesture that's his alone, a nod, a half-sentence, a way of setting down a cup. And he has a wound he shows only to her.

When you're the lead, the term becomes literal. Aleks in “Ma'am” calls you Ma'am and listens even when you say nothing. Konstantin in “The Night Archive” shares tea rituals that hide more than they reveal. King Cael in “The Pact Beneath the Ice” hasn't smiled in a century, and what he does next depends on your move.
