Spice Level

Spice level describes how openly a romance shows physical intimacy, from a door that closes on the first kiss to scenes written in full. Readers use it to know what they're in for before they start, and to match a book to the evening.

The word comes from the reading community, where anything beyond a kiss is “spicy”. Many readers rate their shelves in chillies, one to five. The scale isn't about quality. It's about fit: some nights call for a closed door and some don't, and neither choice needs defending.

A story reveals its level early. Watch where the narration puts its attention when two people are close, on faces or on hands. Notice what happens after the first kiss, a cut to morning or a continued scene. The first chapters usually tell you everything.

Everglow calls spice level intensity and gives it three settings: suggestive, sensual and explicit. You choose it yourself and can change it whenever you like, even in the middle of a season. Same story, same man, but you decide how close the camera comes.
