Stories for Long Nights

The night is long. The story should be too.

For nights when you aren't going to sleep anyway, you need stories with depth: a cast, a secret that won't resolve in three chapters, a man who says so little that every answer counts. These are the densest stories in the catalogue. When you stop is your decision, not the chapter's.

What it is about

Stories for Long Nights

Some nights aren't slept through so much as read through. The room is dark, the phone is lit, and all you want is a story that doesn't thin out as it gets late. That takes material: a world that can't be explained in a sentence, characters with a past, a secret bigger than the two of you. The stories on this page were picked for exactly those hours. They have courts with intrigue, archives with forbidden stacks, families with ledgers nobody is meant to see.

“Under His Protection” opens with a capo at your door and tightens with every chapter, because you're guarding your husband's books and Dante knows it. “The Pact Beneath the Ice” binds you for seven years to a court under a frozen lake, where courtiers bet against you and the king is forbidden to love. Aboard the Helios station only you and Commander Vale are left, with six months of radio silence ahead. “The Antiquarian's Debt” is a single Berlin night with money and hearts on the table. In the Carpathians a forester brings you firewood, and his eyes catch the light wrong. And in the Vienna night archive your superior has had two centuries to think of questions.

On Everglow the long night runs at your pace. Each chapter is 400 to 500 words and ends on your move, so you can stop after one or read eight in a row without the story losing density. The characters remember what you said at two and pick it up at half past. You set the intensity yourself; for long nights the range runs from suggestive to explicit, and you can change it mid-story. When morning comes you know where you stand, and so does the story.

Chapter 1 of “Under His Protection”, the way a reader opens it for the first time. Then it’s her move.

Under His ProtectionChapter 1

The ledgers are in the piano bench. Nobody looks in a piano bench, and my husband knew it, and now I know it, and that is the whole of my inheritance. I am Chiara, thirty-five, a widow for six weeks in a house above Naples that is too big for one woman and exactly the right size for her fear.

The car comes up the drive at nine. Black, unhurried. I knew it would come eventually. I didn't know it would be him.

Dante. My husband's second, now his successor, the man who stood behind him at every dinner and never once sat down. He comes to the door alone, which is either respect or a message, and he takes off his hat, which is both.

“Signora.” He looks past me into the hall, taking inventory the way men like him do. “I've come to offer you my protection.”

“I have a gate.”

“You have a gate and no one behind it.” He doesn't step forward. He waits to be asked, and I understand that the asking is the point. If I let him in, it is my choice, and he wants it to be. “There are people who believe your husband kept records,” he says. “They will come. Some of them won't take off their hats.”

He knows. Or he is guessing, and the guess is good enough. Behind me in the salon the piano sits with its lid down and its bench full of enough to bury him and everyone he answers to, and he is standing on my step, patient, dark-eyed, offering me a wall to hide behind that has his name carved into it.

“Coffee,” I say. “Not protection. Coffee, and then we'll see.” He smiles for the first time, and it is not a safe smile, and he steps over my threshold as if he has been waiting weeks to be allowed to.

And now it's your turn.

Common questions

In short

How long is a story on Everglow?

A season is a run of chapters of 400 to 500 words each, enough for several evenings or one long night. After that you can start a new season, and the characters still hold everything from the first.

What makes a story dense enough for a long night?

More than two characters, a world with its own rules, and a secret that doesn't unravel in three chapters. The stories on this page have courts, families, stations and archives with at least one door you haven't opened yet.

Can I change the intensity in the middle of the night?

Any time. You can begin a story on suggestive and switch to sensual at two in the morning, or the other way round. The story stays the same; only the camera moves closer or further away.

Your long night

Six months of silence. Two people. One station.

In “Last Voice in the Dead Zone” only you and Commander Vale are left aboard after the solar storm. The hum of life support is the only sound until you say the first word.
