Claiming

Claiming describes the moment when a character publicly or physically stakes a claim. Affection becomes a statement — to you and to everyone else.

The gesture can be small: a hand on your back while he talks to someone else. It can also be big: a sentence in front of witnesses that leaves no room for interpretation. What matters is that it's directed outward. Claiming happens in front of an audience.

In paranormal romance, this has a literal form — the bond between mates that cannot be undone. In dark romance, it's social: who belongs to whom is information that means protection.

The line is thin, and that's the real substance. The same gesture can mean "nothing will happen to you" or "you're not going anywhere." Which one it is, you decide.
