The appeal lies in the advantage you gain. When you know his perspective, you know his silence isn't disinterest — and you suffer all the more with her, who doesn't know. Tension then arises not from mystery, but from the distance between two truths.

The price is also well-known: if you know both sides, it's harder to immerse yourself in one. That's why many books switch to the second perspective late, after the bond with the first is already established.
