Pining

Pining is the prolonged, often secret longing for someone you aren't with. It can last years, stay unspoken and colour an entire story; the payoff is the moment it is finally said aloud.

The word means to waste away with longing, and romance treats it as fuel. It powers every story in which one person has loved the other for years before the other notices. Readers know before the characters do, and that knowledge aches in the best way.

Spot it in what gets kept. A memory that won't fade, a kiss, a summer, a sentence. Objects held onto: a pendant, a letter, a boat somebody quietly fixed. And glances that turn away the instant they might be caught.

In “The Last Frontier” you've carried a kiss from eight years ago like a splinter under the skin, and he still wears the pendant. In “Two Weeks” you loved your sister-in-law before she ever married your brother. And in “Two Weeks at the Lake” your stepbrother has secretly repaired a rowboat that remembers everything left unsaid.
