Yandere

Yandere describes a character whose affection is so great it turns into possessiveness. The care is real, the threat is real — and both come from the same person.

The term comes from Japanese fan vocabulary and made its way into the Western romance scene. It combines two words: one meaning "sick with love" and the other meaning "tender." That very contradiction is the point. A yandere character protects you and simultaneously cuts you off from everything else.

You don't recognize the type by loud behavior, but by attention. He knows where you've been. He's already solved the problem before you mentioned it. He's calm when others would be angry — because he's already handled things, his way.

In dark romance, this is one of the most effective sources of tension because the reader never quite knows whether she's being protected or imprisoned. At Everglow, you decide in each chapter how much closeness you allow — and the character remembers what you said.
