Forbidden Love

Forbidden love is a romance trope in which an outside rule stands against the relationship: family, vows, marriage, profession or loyalty. The suspense doesn't come from whether they want each other but from what they're prepared to give up.

It is the oldest engine a love story has, and it runs because prohibition sharpens perception. Every look is counted, every touch is a decision. Readers dread discovery alongside the characters and hope for the next step anyway.

Watch for a third party owed loyalty: a brother, a husband, a religious order. Meetings happen in secret or under observation. And the cost is concrete rather than vague, a family, a vocation, a name in the papers.

In “Letters from the Aunt” a quiet closeness grows between you and a novice who is weeks away from his final vows. In “The Thursday Visits” your husband's defence attorney stays an hour longer each week while the neighbours watch. And in “Two Weeks” the sister-in-law you loved before she married your brother moves into your flat.
