You'll know it by the shift in register. A moment ago it was ordinary, a conversation, a rehearsal. Then his eyes land on something and the story holds its breath. Often it is the first time she understands what she means to him.

In “Ma'am” the danger has a shape: threatening letters, an audience that must be screened, a bodyguard who keeps his professional distance until it can't be kept. Whether Annika lets him see her fear is your call, and the story answers accordingly.
