Home Alone

Nobody's watching. So you can read the story you actually want.

An evening home alone is the chance for stories you don't read on the train: closer, more intense, with men who know where the line is and stand at the door anyway. The stories here are themselves set in houses where two people are alone. You set the intensity, and nobody but you sees how.

What it is about

Home Alone

The flat is empty, the phone is on silent, and the evening belongs to you. This is the moment for the stories you don't start in daylight: the one with the guest room a stranger moves into. The one with the summer house where the wrong man suddenly appears. The one with the sister-in-law who stays. Every story on this page takes place in a house where two people are alone with the door shut, and each is told as close as you allow.

In “Ma'am” an ex-soldier moves into your guest room because threatening letters have torn your life open, and he keeps his professional distance until closeness becomes unavoidable. “Summer House by the Baltic Sea” is two weeks of August heat alone with the man who was never meant to be yours, and every glance counts. In “Two Weeks” you're Leon, and you've taken in your sister-in-law; in familiar rooms, everything is suddenly at stake. In “Under His Protection” you guard your murdered husband's ledgers in a lonely house until the new capo knocks. “Red Ink” takes you from a faculty party into a game of power and desire with your supervisor. And in “Wild Woods” a forester brings firewood to your cabin in the Carpathians, his eyes catching the light wrong, while the village stays out of the trees.

On Everglow this evening is entirely yours. You set the intensity, suggestive, sensual or explicit, before the first page loads, and can change it if the evening takes a different turn. Everything you read and write stays private: no profiles, no likes, no shared links, neutral billing. The characters remember how close you let them come and meet you accordingly in the next chapter. For adults over 18 only, and written exactly that way.

How it begins

Reading sample: Ma'am

Chapter 1 of “Ma'am”, the way a reader opens it for the first time. Then it’s her move.

Ma'amChapter 1

The third letter came with a pressed flower inside, which is how I knew it was serious. The first two I put in a drawer. This one my label put in a file, and the file produced a man. I am Annika, thirty-two, a concert pianist, and since Tuesday there has been a stranger sleeping in my guest room.

Aleks does not sit. In four days I have learned this. He stands near doors, near windows, near the piano while I practise, and he says “Ma'am” in a voice that makes the word sound like a rank he has assigned me. Ex-military, the label said, as if that explained the way he checks the corridor before I'm allowed to walk down it.

Tonight is the first concert since the letters. He is in the side aisle, where I asked him not to be, and he is not watching me. He is watching the audience, row by row, through the lens of a small camera he holds like a weapon he's been told to keep holstered.

I play the sonata. I play it badly for eight bars because I can feel him there, and then I play it well because I can feel him there, and I don't know which frightens me more.

Afterwards, in the dressing room, he closes the door and stands with his back to it.

“Row K,” he says. “Aisle seat. He left during the second movement and didn't come back. I've given his description to the hall.”

“You didn't hear a note, did you.”

“I heard all of it, Ma'am.” He says it flatly, and then something shifts in his face, one small muscle, and he adds, “You changed the tempo in the third movement. You've never done that in rehearsal.” He is right. I did it for him, to see if he'd notice. He noticed. He is standing very still, waiting for an order, and I am sitting very still, realising that for the first time I don't know what to tell him to do.

Your turn now.

Common questions

In short

How explicit do the stories get?

As explicit as you set them. Three levels are available, suggestive, sensual and explicit, and you can switch at any time. The same story reads differently on each level; the man stays the same.

Is Everglow only for adults?

Yes, 18 and over. The stories are written for adult readers, and the explicit intensity level is exactly what the name says.

Does everything really stay private?

Yes. There are no profiles, no likes and no links anyone could share. Your stories are visible only to you, and the bill doesn't say what you read.

Your evening alone

He's moving into the guest room. Tonight.

In “Ma'am” Aleks is standing in the hallway with a bag and calls you Ma'am. Whether you show him the room or ask questions first is your opening move, and he remembers either one.
