Monster Romance: When Love Breathes Differently

Monster Romance is no costume ball – the partner is truly different, and that's exactly what makes love possible.

Monster Romance tells of relationships between humans and non-human beings. The difference is no gimmick; it determines the rules of the relationship: different time, different morality, a body that doesn't lie. It's not about disguise, but about real otherness that makes closeness possible in the first place.

What it is about

Monster Romance

In Wild Woods, you play Irina, a young woman living in a village at the edge of the forest. The village men are strangers to her, but the one lurking among the trees is strange in a completely different way. His gaze gets under your skin because he is not human – and because he sees you as no human has ever seen you. The tension arises not despite, but because of his otherness.

In The Night Archive, you are Elara, 29, an archivist at the British Library in London. Your new supervisor is a vampire who has been waiting for a real connection for two hundred years. He has different rhythms of time, different needs, a different way of loving. The relationship demands that you rethink your ideas of closeness and intimacy—and that's exactly what makes it so intense.

In Flames Under the Skin, you play Kael, a dragon in human form who guards the border town of Eskaar. When the healer Liora saves you, your secret threatens to shatter. You are the one who must hide, whose body doesn't lie when emotions flare. The perspective is different: you are the monster that wants to love without destroying.

Chapter 1 of “Wild Woods”, the way a reader opens it for the first time. Then it’s her move.

Wild WoodsChapter 1

My grandmother's cabin sits at the end of a track the taxi driver refused to take, so I walk the last kilometre with my suitcase bumping over roots. I am Irina, thirty-one, and I have come to the Carpathians for the thing the notary called a modest inheritance and I call the first quiet I've had in years. The village below has a church, a shop, and a rule nobody wrote down: in by dark.

I learn the rule from the shopkeeper, who sells me bread and matches and says, not unkindly, that the woods aren't for evenings. When I ask why, she looks at the clock.

On the second night the firewood arrives.

The forester carries it up the track on his shoulder, four bundles, as if it weighs nothing. His name is Luca. He is perhaps thirty-five, dark, quiet, with a jaw that has never met a razor it liked, and he stacks the wood by the door without being asked and without asking anything either.

“You're her granddaughter,” he says finally. “She talked about you.”

“She didn't talk about you.”

“No. She wouldn't have.” He straightens, and the lamp in my doorway catches his eyes, and for a second they throw the light back the way an animal's do on a road at night, gold and flat and wrong. Then he blinks and they are only brown, and I have been awake for twenty hours, and I tell myself that is all it is.

Your move.

Honestly

Who this is for. And who it isn’t.

This is yours if you

  • You're looking for love stories where the partner is truly different – not just in costume.
  • You like tension that comes from otherness, not from misunderstandings.
  • You want to read how love works under different rules: different time, different morality, different bodies.
  • You've had enough of human dramas and long for an encounter that challenges you.

Skip it if you

  • You want the partner to end up being just a cursed human after all – then better read Dark Romance.
  • You're looking for quick gratification without emotional depth – then Monster Romance is too slow for you.
  • You don't like stories where the other's body is truly different – then stick with classic Romance.

You set the heat yourself, from implied to explicit, and can change it in any story. What you don’t want doesn’t happen: your character keeps her boundaries.

Common questions

In short

What does Monster Romance mean?

Monster Romance is a genre in which a romantic relationship between a human and a non-human being is told. The partner can be a vampire, dragon, werewolf, or something else entirely – the important thing is that the otherness is real and shapes the relationship.

Distinction from Dark Romance

Dark Romance focuses on power imbalances, taboos, and morally gray areas – often between two people. Monster Romance has a different center: the otherness of the partner. A vampire in Monster Romance is not a symbol of power, but a being with its own time, its own body, its own way of loving.

What role do I play as a reader?

In Everglow, you decide in every chapter. In Wilde Wälder, for example, you play Irina and choose whether to get closer to the forest's secret or to pull back. Your decisions determine whether the relationship grows or fails.

How intense are the stories?

Monster Romance at Everglow is emotionally deep and sensual, but not necessarily explicit. The intensity comes from the otherness: a look that lingers too long, a touch that is different. The stories are divided into chapters and unfold slowly – like a real encounter.

Your first night

Enter the forest. Meet the one who lives there.

In Wilde Wälder, you play Irina, 31, and live in a village at the edge of an ancient forest. The village men are strangers to you – but the one lurking among the trees is strange in a way that won't let you go. Your first decision: Do you go toward him or stay on the safe side?
