Something Forbidden

A rule doesn't make the love bigger. It makes every glance louder.

This mood is for nights when you want to read what you'd never do: the stepfather at the summer house, the capo on the doorstep, the sister-in-law who moves into your flat. The pull is knowing it's wrong and turning the page anyway. How far it goes is a setting you control.

What it is about

Something Forbidden

Some stories aren't recommended so much as slipped into your hand. They take place in houses where two people know too much about each other, and on nights when a third person who should be there isn't: the brother, the husband, the mother whose summer house it is. What's forbidden in these stories is never a sign on the wall. It's a person who happens not to be in the room, and that absence makes the room very small.

The mood has two branches. One is family by marriage: the stepbrother you haven't spoken to in five years, now clearing out a lake house with you; the stepfather who turns up unannounced while August heat sits on the Baltic; the sister-in-law who leaves your brother and needs somewhere to stay. The other is crime: a capo offering protection you didn't ask for, a publisher in a Berlin gaming club who knows your brother's debts to the euro, a Frankfurt club owner who sees straight through your cover and hires you anyway. In both branches you know on page one that this cannot end well. You keep reading.

On Everglow you're not watching any of this from the sofa. When Robert asks whether you'd like another glass, your answer is what turns the chapter. When Dante offers his protection, you can refuse, accept, or ask him a question he'll be thinking about tomorrow. The characters keep everything that has passed between you; a no in the first week still carries weight in the third. And the intensity, suggestive, sensual or explicit, is yours to set, not the story's. That keeps the forbidden what it should be: a line you move yourself.

Chapter 1 of “Under His Protection”, the way a reader opens it for the first time. Then it’s her move.

Under His ProtectionChapter 1

The ledgers are in the piano bench. Nobody looks in a piano bench, and my husband knew it, and now I know it, and that is the whole of my inheritance. I am Chiara, thirty-five, a widow for six weeks in a house above Naples that is too big for one woman and exactly the right size for her fear.

The car comes up the drive at nine. Black, unhurried. I knew it would come eventually. I didn't know it would be him.

Dante. My husband's second, now his successor, the man who stood behind him at every dinner and never once sat down. He comes to the door alone, which is either respect or a message, and he takes off his hat, which is both.

“Signora.” He looks past me into the hall, taking inventory the way men like him do. “I've come to offer you my protection.”

“I have a gate.”

“You have a gate and no one behind it.” He doesn't step forward. He waits to be asked, and I understand that the asking is the point. If I let him in, it is my choice, and he wants it to be. “There are people who believe your husband kept records,” he says. “They will come. Some of them won't take off their hats.”

He knows. Or he is guessing, and the guess is good enough. Behind me in the salon the piano sits with its lid down and its bench full of enough to bury him and everyone he answers to, and he is standing on my step, patient, dark-eyed, offering me a wall to hide behind that has his name carved into it.

“Coffee,” I say. “Not protection. Coffee, and then we'll see.” He smiles for the first time, and it is not a safe smile, and he steps over my threshold as if he has been waiting weeks to be allowed to.

And now it's your turn.

Common questions

In short

Aren't stepsibling stories a problem?

Every character in the catalogue is an adult, and the stepsiblings aren't related by blood; most of them meet for the first time as grown-ups. The taboo is social rather than familial: loyalty, expectations, and what a parents' wedding changes between two strangers. If the motif isn't for you, Power and Control and Adrenaline hold plenty of other lines to cross.

How dark does it get?

As dark as you set it. The backdrop is dangerous, organised crime, debt, an undercover investigation, but the men never turn their hardness on you. The intensity setting decides whether closeness is suggested, sensual or explicit, and you can change it mid-story.

Can anyone see what I'm reading?

No. There are no profiles, no likes and no shareable links. Your stories are visible to you alone, and the billing stays neutral.

Your first night

He's at the door. You have the key.

In “Under His Protection” the new capo offers you something you didn't want and can't refuse. What you say to him decides how the night unfolds.
