Adrenaline

A racing heart can't tell fear from falling. Neither can these stories.

This mood is for nights when you don't want to calm down: ice rinks where a lift only works if you trust him, an ex-soldier who listens to every concert from the side aisle, a station in orbit with two people left alive. The body is always involved, in competition, in danger, in closeness. And you decide when tension turns into something else.

What it is about

Adrenaline

Some stories make you grip the phone tighter. They happen where the body can't lie: on the ice, where a lift works only because you let yourself fall. In an empty arena after midnight, where the captain faces the team doctor he walked out on five years ago. On the North Sea, where a lifeguard from Lisbon tells you to your face that you're running your surf school into the ground. Sports stories are love stories with a clock: six weeks to qualification, one season, one summer. Every touch is technique first, until it isn't.

The other half of this mood is danger. In “Ma'am” Aleks moves into your guest room because threatening letters have pulled your life apart, and he scans your audience through a lens before you play the first note. Aboard the Helios station, after the solar storm, only you and Commander Vale remain, a security officer with a redacted past, and the hum of life support is the only sound between you. In Frankfurt you're the investigator whose cover a club owner reads in a second, and one wrong step could be your last. The pulse here isn't a side effect. It's the plot.

On Everglow you decide every chapter whether to keep the pace or slow it. You can give Viktor your hand on the ice or make him wait a lap. You can ask Aleks what the letters said or pretend you're not afraid, and he'll notice either way. The characters remember where you were brave and where you weren't, and the story answers accordingly. Adrenaline here means you're not in the stands, you're on the ice, and the intensity, suggestive, sensual or explicit, is set before the music starts.

How it begins

Reading sample: Ice and Fire

Chapter 1 of “Ice and Fire”, the way a reader opens it for the first time. Then it’s her move.

Ice and FireChapter 1

The rink at six in the morning belongs to the machine and me. I am Lena, twenty-six, and I have skated this ice before anyone else for four years, because that is how you become technically perfect: alone, early, without witnesses. Today there is someone at the boards.

Viktor. Black jacket, hands in his pockets, watching me finish a twizzle sequence as if he's grading it. Two years ago he told a journalist I had the emotional range of a metronome. The quote made it into every profile since.

“Your partner's out for the season,” he says when I glide over. Not hello. “Torn ligament. Your federation called mine at midnight.”

“I know what happened to my partner.”

“Then you know why I'm here.” He steps onto the ice in skates I didn't notice him wearing. He is taller than I remembered, and he stops far too close, the way lifts require. “Six weeks to qualification. One free dance. Theme's already filed.” He pauses. “It's about love, Lena.”

I laugh, because the alternative is to hit him. “Whose idea was that?”

“Fate has a sense of humour.” He holds out his hand for the first hold, palm up, waiting. It is a simple thing, a partner's hand, and I have taken hundreds. This one I stare at. Somewhere in the stands the coach has arrived and is pretending to check her phone. The ice hums under us. Viktor doesn't lower his hand and doesn't say anything clever, and for the first time in two years I can't tell whether he's mocking me or asking.

Your turn now.

Common questions

In short

Do I need to like sport to enjoy sports romance?

No. The sport supplies rules, a deadline and a reason to touch, and that's all it's there for. Ice dance, hockey or surfing, it comes down to two people forced to build trust in public that neither wants to give.

How much thriller is in romantic suspense?

Enough to keep your pulse up, not enough to crowd out the love story. The danger comes from outside, threatening letters, a solar storm, a money-laundering case, and it pushes together two people who'd otherwise keep their distance.

Can I change a story's pace?

Yes. Every chapter ends on your move, and whether you push forward or ask a question that slows everything down shapes the next section. The story follows your tempo, not the other way round.

Your first rehearsal

Six weeks. One routine. The wrong partner.

In “Ice and Fire” you have to learn a routine about love with Viktor, and the first lift is today. Whether you let yourself fall is your call.
