Love in Every Colour

Who you love isn't the twist here. It's where the story starts.

This mood gathers the catalogue's queer stories: a mountain rescuer trapped in a hut with the snowboarder he pulled from an avalanche, and a nonbinary archivist in Prague whose books whisper. Love isn't the topic here; it's the plot. You play Bastian or Ash, and the characters remember what you tell them.

What it is about

Love in Every Colour

Some readers have waited a long time for a story that meant them without turning it into a lesson. These stories do that. They don't open with an explanation; they open with an avalanche or a book that whispers. Who loves whom isn't up for debate. The only question is whether the two of them will let it happen. The conflicts are the good old ones: mistrust, silence, a secret bigger than both of you.

In “Snowbound” you're Bastian, a mountain rescuer to the bone, and you've just pulled a snowboarder out of the snow who now sits in your station and won't stop talking. The blizzard is outside, the supplies last three days, and Tobias is running from everything: the quiet, the closeness, you. In “The Whispering Library of Prague” you're Ash, twenty-nine, nonbinary, hearing the books speak in the silent hours of the archive. The night watchman Milan says he hears them too, and you can feel that he's lying. Both stories are slow burns, both have a hut or a stack room with no way to avoid each other, and neither asks whether you're allowed.

The catalogue is growing, and this mood with it. What's true already: you play the lead with their name, their age and their point of view, and what you say, do or wish for at the end of each chapter shapes how Tobias or Milan meets you next. If two stories aren't enough, a world of your own starts from 20 sparks, with the role you want to play and the person waiting there for you. The intensity is yours to set, as it is everywhere.

How it begins

Chapter 1 of “Snowbound”, the way a reader opens it for the first time. Then it’s her move.

SnowboundChapter 1

The slab came off the north face at ten past two, and by three I had him out of it: one snowboarder, alive, furious, with a wrist that will need setting and a mouth that hasn't stopped. I am Bastian, thirty-six, mountain rescue for fifteen years, and my station is the only roof for six kilometres, and the road below it is now under four metres of snow.

Tobias sits by the stove with his wrist splinted and my second-best jumper on, and he has spent the last hour telling me what he thinks of the avalanche warning system, the resort, the mountain, and me.

“You could have left me,” he says. “You'd have had the hut to yourself.”

“I could have.” I hand him tea. “I'm not built like that.”

“How are you built?” He asks it like a challenge. Everything with him is a challenge. He is thirty perhaps, all edges, and I've met enough of his kind on this mountain to know that the noise is where the fear goes.

I don't answer. I check the radio, which is dead. I check the supplies, which will last three days if he eats like a normal person, and I have my doubts. Outside, the storm has settled in for the night, and in here there is one stove, one bed, one bench, and a man watching me the way you watch a door you're not sure is locked.

“You don't talk much,” he says, quieter now. “You do enough for both of us,” I tell him.

That earns a laugh, the first real one, and it changes his face completely, and I look away from it because that is not why I came up this mountain. When I look back, he's holding the tea in both hands and the challenge has gone out of him. “Three days,” he says. “In here. With you.” He isn't complaining. He's asking me what we do about that, and I'm the one who's supposed to know.

Your move.

Common questions

In short

How many queer stories are in the catalogue?

Two at the moment: a love story between two men in the mountains and one with a nonbinary lead in Prague. The catalogue keeps growing, and in a world of your own you define the role and the love interest entirely yourself.

Can I choose who I love in every story?

In catalogue stories the role and the love interest are fixed, as in a book. In a world of your own you set both, from 20 sparks. What you say, do and wish for inside the story is yours either way.

Are queer characters written differently?

No. Same care, same tropes, same freedom over intensity. Bastian and Tobias are a grumpy-sunshine pair in a snowed-in hut, and that's the whole description they need.

Your first night

The hut is small. The storm isn't.

In “Snowbound” you've just pulled Tobias out of the snow, and he's already talking. Three days of supplies, one fire, and you decide whether to answer him.
