Other Worlds

When the world runs on different laws, only one still counts: what's between you.

This mood is for readers who don't just want a different man but a different world: a court under a frozen lake, a library whose books whisper, a spa hotel where a corset and a class line stand between you. The rules there are strange; the feelings aren't. And you choose which rule to break first.

What it is about

Other Worlds

Sometimes changing the setting isn't enough. You want to change the laws. In these stories the world is the obstacle. An oath forbids a king to love. A contract binds you for seven years to a court where time runs differently. A superior has waited two centuries and could wait two more. A forester's eyes catch the light the wrong way, and the village keeps out of the woods after dark. What a single conversation would settle in the present is, here, a pact, a curse, a border between mortal and immortal.

The past is another world too. In the summer of 1913 you're Henriette, sent to the Waldesruh Spa Hotel so your family can sit out the gossip about your broken engagement, and the assistant physician prescribes defiance instead of rest. The rules are propriety, station and whalebone, and a duel of words can hit as hard as a bargain with the fae. In Prague you're Ash, hearing the books whisper and knowing the night watchman is lying when he claims to hear them too. In Eskaar you're Kael, a dragon in human form, and a healer has just seen your wound. Every one of these worlds puts a price on closeness, and each collects it differently.

On Everglow the rules of these worlds are in your hands. You decide whether Runa asks the king a question no courtier would dare, whether Elara drinks the tea or searches the archive for his name, whether Henriette contradicts the doctor or lets him walk into his own argument. The characters remember every transgression and the world responds: courtiers change their bets, an oath creaks, a pack grows restless. You set the intensity, and a season ends where a pact is fulfilled or broken. After that, if you want, a new winter begins beneath the ice.

The Pact Beneath the IceChapter 1

The contract said one night's work. I read it twice, because I am Runa, twenty-eight, a bookbinder, and I know how a clause can hide in the stitching. I signed anyway, for a sum that would have paid off my workshop. That was three days ago, by my count. Down here, under the frozen lake, the courtiers tell me it has been a month.

The Winter Court is all blue light and long halls, and the ice above us creaks like a roof that hasn't decided whether to hold. They gave me a room, a fur, and a stack of the King's books to rebind. Every spine is cracked in the same place, as if someone kept opening them to one page.

Today they bring me before him. King Cael sits without a crown, hands folded, and the hall is so quiet I can hear the frost forming on my sleeves. They say he hasn't smiled in a hundred years. Looking at him, I believe it; his mouth has forgotten the shape.

“The clause is binding,” he says. “Seven years. I did not write it, but I cannot unmake it.”

“Then tell me who did.”

A murmur runs along the walls. Behind me, a courtier in silver laughs softly and I hear coins change hands. They are betting on me. On how long before I weep, or run, or freeze in a corridor I don't know.

The King rises and comes down the steps until he is one pace away. Up close, his eyes are the colour of the lake at dusk, and there is something behind them that is not cold at all. “Careful, bookbinder,” he says, so low only I can hear. “Down here, questions have a price, and I am forbidden to pay it for you.” He waits, and the whole court waits with him.

Your turn now.

Common questions

In short

What is romantasy, and how is it different from fantasy?

Romantasy puts the love story at the centre and uses the fantasy world as obstacle and amplifier. In classic fantasy, love is a side plot beside war and prophecy. Here the pact with the fae matters only because it stands between you and Cael.

Do I need to know the world before I start?

No. Each story explains its rules as it goes, through what the characters do and don't do. You begin as a bookbinder, an archivist or a spa guest and learn the world the way your character learns it.

Are there historical stories without magic?

Yes. “Waldesruh Spa Hotel” is set in the summer of 1913 with nothing supernatural in it. The other rules there are class, decorum and a doctor who ignores both.

Your first winter

The contract is signed. Now read the small print.

In “The Pact Beneath the Ice” you only meant to trade one night's work for a handsome sum. Now seven years belong to the Winter Court, and King Cael hasn't smiled in a hundred of them.
